Orthopedic/ Sports Massage
Orthopedic, or Clinical Sports Massage, is advanced bodywork directed at relieving soft tissue-based pain and dysfunction. It’s orientation is wholly focused on problem-solving, rather than on relaxation. It is that problem-focused approach that defines it, rather than any catalogue of techniques. It requires extensive training and practical knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, and a technical repertoire that goes way beyond simply “rubbing where it hurts”.
It actually incorporates many specific styles of bodywork – myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, muscle energy technique and other forms of therapeutic stretching, trigger point work, deep tissue, etc., to relieve soft-tissue pain and dysfunction. It is normally done directly on the skin, both with and without sparingly applied oil, and so the client is usually undressed and draped.
NOTE: I will be happy to provide a hand-written receipt, upon request, but I do not deal with insurance companies.

Thai Massage
Thai Massage is one of the most profound and deeply affecting forms of bodywork around, at once relaxing and energizing. In Thailand, it is intended as a physical expression of the Buddhist virtue Metta, usually translated as lovingkindness. (Yep, one word.)
It is performed on a mat, on the floor, with the receiver fully clothed except for being barefoot. The work itself consists of deep compressioning, point work along specific lines, and passive Yoga-style stretching, in an artfully flowing, dance-like progression. I use my hands, forearms, elbows, knees, feet – my whole body, really – to bring ease, opening, suppleness, and release to yours.
Thai Massage can, if desired, be some of the very deepest bodywork there is to be had, yet it is also nurturing and soothing. The resulting synergy and dynamic engagement really does have to be experienced to be grasped. Dress for a Thai session the way you would for a Yoga or Pilates class, or for a workout minus the shoes and socks. As you will not be performing work and generating heat yourself, you may wish to bring an extra layer, in case you get cool as you relax deeply. See you soon…
Relaxation/Wellness Massage
Relaxation, or wellness massage, is essentially just what it sounds like. Its intent is relaxation, preventive maintenance for hard-working soft tissues of the body, and generally lulling body and mind into a state of ease and bliss.
This is far from mere pampering. Stress can be a killer.Modern life grows ever more fast-paced, impersonal, and complex. Today’s threats tend to be less tangible and more omnipresent than those present throughout human history. So, we’re chronically in some level of “fight or flight” mode, and literally fighting or fleeing is rarely appropriate. So we hold it in, and pay with our hearts, arteries, stomachs, backs, necks, noggins and spirits.
Massage introduces through the body – both above and below our threshold of conscious awareness – a flood of new and alternative sensations – ease, length, internal spaciousness – triggering a cascade of responses that is the opposite of fight-or-flight.
For those a bit stuck “in their heads”, massage provides a means of re-inhabiting the body that is soothing, grounding, and restorative. It wordlessly conveys a deep sense of being nurtured and cared for. And last, but by no means least, it feels great! Kind of like a big, long-lasting, chocolate chip cookie! If you’ve ever had a “Swedish Massage” (so-called), where the therapist started by slathering you with oil, then spent the next 60 – 90 minutes sliding the oil around on the surface of your skin, please accept my condolences.
My own approach is considerably more dynamic and comprehensive – personally tailored sessions, blending powerfully soothing and grounding deep-tissue work, flowing and restorative Swedish, passive stretching, and more.
